The 2025 edition of the Energy Storage Summit Latin America provided an essential platform to exchange insights, forge partnerships, and drive forward the development of storage markets across the continent. Stay tuned for updates on the next edition as we continue to advance Latin America's energy storage future together.
Chile continued to stand out as the frontrunner for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Latin America. The country reached a new milestone this year with the largest BESS in the region—located in the Northern Antofagasta region—entering commercial operation.
Curtailment of solar PV and wind continued to increase in Chile last year and passed 6TWh according to the Chilean renewable energy and energy storage association ACERA. Energy and infrastructure investor Glenfarne Group has bought a portfolio of solar PV and co-located BESS projects in Chile from Greece-headquartered firm Metlen Energy & Metals.
BESS Coya, a co-located project with a solar PV farm, is now capable of storing the equivalent of five hours of electricity, delivering around 200 GWh on average per year. Discussions also highlighted the growing potential of other markets such as Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Peru, and Colombia.
From ESS News Wood Mackenzie forecasts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8% in the Latin American energy storage market through 2034, reaching a cumulative capacity of 23
